Physiological and biochemical responses of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) to metal contamination were investigated in hydroponic culture under greenhouse conditions. Different concentrations of Cd (0, 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg kg(-1)) and Pb (0, 20, and 50 mg kg(-1)) were used for growth inhibition and accumulation experiments. The 20 mg Cd kg(-1) and 50 mg Pb kg(-1) treatments showed a significant decrease in the growth rate and dry weight of white clover. The highest values of relative water content (RWC), leaf water potential (Ψ(L)), chlorophyll (Chl) a, b, and carotenoid (Car) contents were recorded at Cd 50 mg kg(-1) and Pb 50 mg kg(-1) levels, whereas, the proline (Pro), soluble protein (SP), and lipid (L) content was the highest at Cd 20 mg kg(-1). Cadmium and lead caused stress injury on the leaves in a dose-dependent manner. The activities of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD, and POD be359ba680
